wow top 5.. hard to make a decision but i'll try my best
1. this one was hard but to 1st place i give to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it was my first N64 game and i remember playing it with my dad all the time i even think he got hooked on it for a while lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdGRQrqUkGU
2. 2nd place goes to Medal of Honor: Allied assault, even though I had played medal of honor frontline on my gamecube i hadn't really gotten so much into fps's until i played allied assault which really gave me an insight of what a good fps means http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3EnVrAquBA
3. i'd give 3rd place to medieval 2 total war, when it first came out i was just drooling all over it i just couldn't come over myself how good it looked and how realistic it was for its time, just the detailed look of the units, the factions, everything looked so perfect and shiny lol and of course the multiplayer was just a sensation of its own, those were some good times on mp(i remember my computer and internet back then oh god was it laggy but i still managed to beat tons of people )
4. 4th place goes to battlefield 2 no doubts, it got me further into FPS's and got me hooked even more to the bf series , especially playing the project reality mod which just added so much more to the original game
5. 5th place i'd give to shogun total war, it's the first total war game i had played and when i was at school all i could think of was when i'd go home and play shogun, it was that good for me at the time it came out, my favorite part was the assassination clips lol they were the best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZA-gqJL9Is

1) Doom.

It's Doom.
Yes, Doom 3 was a bit crap but the originals rocked.
The first FPS I played multiplayer.
2) Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.

To this day, still the best of the series. If you're going to buy it, get the First Decade Box Set, the only CnC games worth bothering with.
It also comes with a map editor that's as easy to use as MS Paint.
3) Supreme Commander + SupCom Forged Alliance.
Red Alert 2's big brother. As awesome as RA2 is, SupCom does it bigger and better. Hundreds of user made maps and thousands of mods ranging from total game conversions to new units keep it interesting.
4) Insurgency Mod (Half-Life mod)

Similar to Counter Strike but Terrorists Vs Marines with no purchase system as it's class based.
Highly addictive if not somewhat aggravating sometimes if you're getting pasted.
Thing PR Lite.
5) Arma 2.

It's fuckin huge with a shit ton of weapons and vehicles all served up on a 250 SqKm map.
It has a steep learning curve but once you get the basics, it's awesome.
An honorable mention to:
Walker (Amiga)

Flashback (Sega Megadrive)

Star Wars (Amstrad CPC 464)

Chuckie Egg (CPC 464 - One of the first games I played)

Choplifer (Sega Master System)

Topgun (Amstrad CPC 464) vid from the NES version though.

i have never liked top 5 lists, mainly because as soon as Im done writing it i remember a different game, also because games can be different but equal.
so ill wright down some games I really, really like.
Dwarf Fortress Dwarf Fortress is a rouge-like game for the PC, if you put in the effort to learn how to play it will devourer days even weeks at a time. the challenge is extreme, its not if your fortress will fall, but when and how. This game is updated every few months, sometimes with small improvements sometimes with reworkings of core mechanics. the thing that keeps this from becoming a super popular game is the learning curve, (more like learning 90 degree angle) i have spent 3 years playing the game and am still learning how some stuff works.
Orcs Must Die 2
this hack and slash/ tower defense hybrid is really fun, the humor is great and it is a very changeling game making co-op a must. i had a blast with the first one and am enjoying the second one a lot

I really couldn't say... just too many!
Although I also get a little shiver whenever I hear the Battlefield music and a quick nod to Alien Breed on the Amiga! Remember playing that with me brothers.

Some really good ones one this thread!
Here is mine:
1) Ocarina of Time - childhood classic probs on a lot of top 5's. If only modern day story games where this long and epic... having said that I would probably not have any qualifications.
2) Goldeneye (N64) - so much fun, genuinely still find it a fun shooter today. A close call with perfect dark (N64) though which has epic multiplayer too. On a site note, all these 'amazing' and 'unique' weapons seen in games like Halo and Black ops - have a look at perfect dark, i mean the weapons in that game are just as badass, if not more so
3) Rome Total War - of course a total war game has to be there. Total war has amazing real time strategy thats above all competition imo. Cutting edge looks, really interesting history... the list goes on. I guess Rome is the classic total war, best time period - probs best total war for its time.
4) Battlefield 3 - a hard one. Its weird putting a modern title in. I do love Bad Company 2 which in a way was more fun but the newest battlefield fixes a lot of issues. Its best playing with friends and I believe you have to play this game a certain way to really enjoy it. But if you think about it, this is probably one of the best online shooters available, an infinate number of strategy's, tactics, equipment, weapons and vehicldes. I also belive the mechanics and all around dynamics of the game are about as perfect as can be, with relation to player health, weapon damage and balancing.
5) Age of empire 2 - AOE 3 was a great title, but 2 is the classic. So much fun, easy to play when I was young, but there are some intricate strategys available to. Different from total war of course as combat isnt really about maneuvering units ect, but the real time economy and advancements in tech where very good.
