Whenever I start ETW I lose all sound and have to restart.

Try having a fiddle with the sound, drop the quality down a bit.
Control Panel - Sound - Right click playback device - Properties - Advanced
Try something like 24bit 48000hz.
I don't play ETW but from experience, it's helped with a few games.

maybe something is messed up with your user_script.txt or user_preferences.txt go to search and then search for Scripts.try to find the one that has Empire or something like that in the directory,then if the user_script text matches with your data folder,user_script.txt is okay,then check user_preferences.txt and go to the bottom and you will find sound if its =disabled change to =enable,this is what i do when i sometimes don't have sound in NTW,usually when i install mods
i'm not sure if this will help,but give it a try.
