Ok, the car is fucked again.

It starts fine, sets off fine, when i put my toe down it speeds up as it should but when I stop, the engine revs to about 3000 rpm and this last for about 3-4 seconds.

When it's finished reving its tits off, it drops to 500rpm and bobbles about between 500 and 200 rpm? then stalls after a few seconds even with the clutch down.

There is no way on earth I can afford a big repair and I need to car to get my granddad to hospital a couple of times a week.

I need cheap solutions, quickly.

Anyone have a clue what's goin on?

Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec.
W Reg (2000)

Please keep in mind, I know fuck all about cars.

1. when was the last time it was serviced? i.e plugs/leads etc

2.have you noticed if its ok when the engine is still cold and if it gets worse when it reachs runing temp?

3.is the engine management light on,or does it flash when it plays up?

1, It's got new HT leads and ignition coil. Oil change was quite recent and all the other bodily fluids are fine.

2. The car held revs while stationary but it only did it a couple of times in 1 trip then it seemed to settle down but now it does it regardless.

3. No lights come on, it hovers at really low revs then just stalls. It starts straight away again though.

i guess it had plugs at the sametime as new leads

long as the main pipes for air flow are not holed and drawing in air my first thoughts would be air flow meter/air mas meter etc(names change alittle) or idle control valve or egr valve,am sure it will have egr instead of icv, there are other possiblitys but from what you have said my money would be on those,i had similr issues on my astra.Last edited by Soulfly on Fri Oct 14, 2011 6:36 pm; edited 1 time in total

Might be the air flow meter.

Took it to a mates, unplugged it and it seemed to steady out.

Gonna go to the scrappers next week and grab one.

I quite often find stuff like that cheap on eBay. Had a problem with the speedo sensor on the gearbox and found a second-hand one cheap as chips and good nick ad well.

then you should be looking at cleaning the egr or icv,how do you know the maf from scrappy was ok,did you get to start the car to test it first?

No idea how good the MAF is.

The Focus I got it off was a lot newer, there was hardly any dirt on it and the car was there because it had been rear ended.

I kept the old one so after i've done some cleaning, i can try it out if need be.

IF they both work then I'll probably sell one of them to try and recoup some cash.

I'm having a similar problem on my Golf 2.0 GTi.

People are recommending:
1. Cleaning the throttle body
2. Check the crank-case breather pipe for splits and clean if required
3. Split breather pipe might be clogged or split

Thought some of the above might help although mine is '97 so quite old!
